The Peninsula Beijing (Simplified Chinese: 王府半岛酒店; Traditional Chinese: 王府半島酒店; Chinese Pinyin: wáng fǔ bàn dǎo jiǔ diàn) was China’s first luxury hotel when it opened as The Palace Hotel on Goldfish Lane (Jinyu Hutong) in central Wangfujing district in 1989. After assuming the management of the hotel, The Peninsula Hotels, which is part of the Hong Kong And Shanghai Hotels Group, renamed it The Peninsula Beijing in 2006. In 2017, the hotel completed a USD123 million renovation, which was inspired by Beijing’s grand imperial palaces.

Early History of the Site

The Peninsula Beijing is located on Goldfish Lane (Jingu hutong), approximately a 15-minute walk from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The district earned its name as goldfish represent abundance and prosperity in Chinese culture. During the Qing Dynasty, the wealthy Na family constructed a large mansion and imperial-style garden directly opposite to where The Peninsula Beijing now stands. In a tribute to the location, the goldfish is featured in carvings and mosaic artworks in the hotel’s guest rooms and suites.

The Palace Hotel

In May 1986, the foundations were laid for The Palace Hotel, the original name of The Peninsula Beijing. By late 1987, the hotel building designed by eminent architect K.Y. Cheung had acquired its eye-catching Chinese gable and hip roof covered by traditional Beijing colour-glazed roof tiles, which remains a signature feature today.

The doors to The Palace Hotel were opened in May 1989, becoming China’s first luxury hotel.

The Peninsula Beijing

The Peninsula Hotels assumed management of The Palace Hotel in 1996, and the following year the hotel undertook its first renovation. The guest rooms were redesigned to include proprietary in-room technology that was, at the time, unique for a hotel in Beijing, such as a bedside panel controls for the TV, radio and air conditioning, plus a coffee maker and fax machine. The renovated hotel also featured a new business centre and club lounge.

In September 2003, The Palace Hotel was renamed The Peninsula Palace Beijing. Three years later, in 2006, it became The Peninsula Beijing.
