Westfield World Trade Center is a shopping center at the World Trade Center complex in Manhattan, New York, U.S., which is operated and managed by Westfield Corporation. The mall opened on August 16, 2016. It replaces an earlier shopping center called The Mall at the World Trade Center, which was located in the concourse area of the original World Trade Center complex until it was destroyed on September 11, 2001.
The Mall at the World Trade Center was an indoor underground shopping mall that was located in the basement concourse, which was located underneath the main World Trade Center site. Most of the mall itself was located underneath 4 and 5 World Trade Center buildings and under the Austin J. Tobin Plaza. The Mall at the World Trade Center was the largest shopping mall in New York City. The Mall at the World Trade Center had been managed by the Westfield Group. The mall had opened in 1975. The main entrance into mall was located on south side of 4 World Trade Center facing Liberty Street with escalators going down into the mall in the concourse. The mall had also had a main entrance on the east side of 5 World Trade Center facing Church Street that also had escalators going down into concourse as well. The mall also had entrances inside the lobbies of the Twin Towers. The mall had also served as the point of access or the transfer to the Chambers Street subway station by using the A and C trains. The NYC subway system and the PATH trains had intersected in the basement levels underneath the underground concourse level at the World Trade Center. The mall had around 80 stores including chains like Sam Goody, Victoria's Secret, Gap, and other stores as well. The mall also had service-oriented and convenience retailers including Duane Reade. The mall also had a Warner Bros. Studio Store, and the two columns that was on the storefront that had actually served as support beams for 5 World Trade Center. Thousands of people had traveled through the mall, a lot of those people were going to the Twin Towers, and with other people traveling through the mall to get to the subway station and the PATH trains.
