Ellis has many options for transportation, including school bus service from 18 districts; van service from Mt. Lebanon, South Hills, Murrysville, Sewickley, and the northern communities; carpools, and students living nearby walk or bike to The School. Priding itself in being widely diverse, the school serves girls age 3 to grade 12. The mission of The Ellis School is to prepare, empower, and inspire each and every student through an excellent education in an all-girls learning environment. In 1916, Sara Frazier Ellis established "not a large school but a sound and thorough one" to prepare girls and young women for “the rigorous admission requirements of the Eastern women's colleges.”
