Tearfund is a Christian relief and development agency based in the United Kingdom that has worked in over 50 countries. Tearfund primarily focuses on supporting those in poverty and providing disaster relief, especially for disadvantaged communities.
World Refugee Year(1960) inspires Christians to send to the Evangelical Alliance. Later in 1968, the famine in Biafra kick started the fund. The charity organization was forged by the Evangelical Alliance (EA), and the Evangelical Refugee Fund(created by the United Nations). The organization was originally named The Evangelical Alliance Relief Fund Committee, now abbreviated to TEAR Fund.
George Hoffman headed the fund.
In January 1969, Cliff Richard gave two fund-raising concerts for Tearfund at London's Royal Albert Hall.
A new youth and student program in 1670 inspired radical discipleship. At the same time, Tearfund began providing dignified employment for thousands of skilled workers. The fund begins to expand, with many donating £5 a month to sponsor kids in areas such as Bangladesh, providing food, healthcare, and education.
On March 6, 1973, Tearfund was registered as a charity.
In the 1980s, also known as the decade of Live Aid, war in Ethiopia and turmoil in Eastern Europe influenced the largest single charity event ever: Band Aid. This long-term program, starting in 1985, saw a steady flow of aid and supplies into Ethiopia. Tearfund also sent medical teams outward to Somali.
Later again in 1993, Tearfund celebrated its 25th anniversary. Just a year later, Tearfund launched a massive appeal and relief program for the victims of the Rwandan Genocide. Another program involved the aid for victims of Hurricane Mitch that devastated Central America in 1998, which resulted in the joining of the Disaster Emergency Committee. Tearfund became a founder-member of the Jubilee 2000 movement.
