Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company Pvt Ltd is an India-based joint venture between Tata Motors and HCM, Japan. It was previously known as Telco Construction Equipment Co. Ltd.
In 2007, it had more than half of the market share in the excavator segment. Since then, Komatsu and Volvo have gained market share, with Hitachi representing 30-40% of the excavator market. The company has its corporate office at Bangalore and three manufacturing bases in Jamshedpur, Dharwad and Kharagpur. It also has two subsidiaries Serviplem S.A. and Lebrero in Spain. The annual turnover of the company is ₹2300 Crores. It is one of the market leaders of construction equipment industry in India.
The company commenced manufacturing of construction equipment in 1961, as a division of TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company, now TATA Motors at its Jamshedpur plant. In 1984, it entered into a technical collaboration with HCM, Japan for manufacturing hydraulic excavators. In 2000, HCM acquired a 20% stake in JV, which increased to 40% in 2005 and currently stands at 60%. The company offers the largest range of Hydraulic excavators under a single brand in India. It currently has manufacturing plants at Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Kharagpur (West Bengal)and Dharwad (Karnataka).
