TasNetworks, the trading name of Tasmanian Networks Pty Limited, is a Tasmanian Government-owned corporation that is responsible for electricity transmission and distribution throughout Tasmania. They also own and operate a telecommunications network throughout the state. TasNetworks is a participant in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) that operates an interconnected power system that extends from Queensland to South Australia. Tasmania is connected to the NEM via Basslink.
TasNetworks was formed on 1 July 2014 by the merger of transmission company Transend Networks and the distribution division of Aurora Energy; with the resultant wind-up of Transend Networks, and Aurora Energy becoming a retail-only business and a fall in Tasmanian electricity prices.
TasNetworks also owns and operates a telecommunications business that serves customers in the electricity supply industry and in other industries.
TasNetworks is a regulated monopoly that receives its revenue cap from the Australian Energy Regulator.
The company has two shareholders, the Minister for Energy and the Treasurer of Tasmania.
