Tadataka "Tachi" Yamada, MD, KBE (山田忠孝 Yamada Tadataka or “ターチ Tachi”, June 5, 1945– ), is Executive Vice-President, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer, and a Board Member of Takeda Pharmaceuticals. He has responsibility for all of Takeda’s research and development activities.

Yamada was born in Tokyo, a grandson of one of the first people of Japanese descent to be fully trained as an American physician, and completed his education in the United States. Yamada graduated from Phillips Academy in 1963. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University, and MD from New York University. After completing his internal medicine training at the Medical College of Virginia, he served as an investigator in the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and trained in gastroenterology at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he assumed his first faculty position.

A scientist and scholar in gastroenterology, Yamada is the author of more than 150 original manuscripts on the subject and is the editor of The Textbook of Gastroenterology (now in its Fifth Edition).

Before joining Takeda, Yamada was the President of the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.[2] In this role, he led the foundation’s efforts to help develop and deliver low-cost, life-saving health tools for the developing world.

Yamada served as Chairman of Research and Development and was a member of the Board of Directors at GlaxoSmithKline before joining the foundation.

Prior to that, he was Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Physician-in-Chief at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Yamada is a past president of the American Gastroenterological Association and the Association of American Physicians, a master of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in the United States, the Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom , and the National Academy of Medicine in Mexico.
