Hollyoaks is a British television soap opera that was first broadcast on 23 October 1995. The following is a list of characters that appeared in the serial in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters were introduced by executive producer, Bryan Kirkwood. The first character to be introduced was James Nightingale, a mysterious solicitor who begins manipulating Cindy Cunningham, in January. February began with the arrival of the Nightingale family's matriarch, Marnie. March and April included the first appearances of Grace Black's half-brothers, Liam Donovan, Adam and Jesse Donovan, as well as the first appearance of Simone and Louis Loveday's missing daughter Lisa Loveday, who had previously been impersonated by Sonia Albright. June saw the first appearance of new police officer DS Armstrong, with Diego Salvador Martinez Hernandez De La Cruz's ex-wife Maria, Cameron Campbell's cousin Courtney and Amy Barnes' fiancé Ryan Knight arriving in August. September saw the arrivals of Dirk Savage's nephew, Nick, Jack Osborne's brother, Billy Brody and niece Eva Falco, Diego's mother Juanita Salvador Martinez Hernandez De La Cruz and Grace, Liam, Adam and Jesse's mother Tracey Donovan. Marnie's mother Tabitha Maxwell-Brown and an expansion of the McQueen family – Goldie, Prince and Hunter were introduced in November, while Dr. Barton appeared in December.
