Syed Mohammad Ali (9 December 1928 – 17 October 1993) was a Bangladeshi journalist. He was the founder editor of the newspaper The Daily Star.
Ali was born to Syed Mostafa Ali, an official of the Assam Civil Service. Ali was a nephew of litterateur Syed Mujtaba Ali and Syed Murtaza Ali.
Ali had a 44 year long journalist career. He started his career as a reporter with the Pakistan Observer.
Ali was the chairman of the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB). He launched The Daily Star in 1991.
