Stewart W. Bainum Jr. (born March 25, 1946, Takoma Park, Maryland) is an American businessman, politician and philanthropist.

Stewart W. Bainum Jr. was born on March 25, 1946 in Takoma Park, Maryland. His father, Stewart W. Bainum Sr., was the founder of Choice Hotels, a hotel chain, and HCR Manor Care, a retirement facility chain.

Bainum was educated at the Takoma Academy. He graduated from Pacific Union College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1968. He received a master in business administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management in 1970. He studied theology at Andrews University from 1970 to 1972.

As a Democrat, he served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1979 to 1982, and as a member of the Maryland Senate from 1983 to 1986. In 1983, Bainum and his sister Barbara sued the Burning Tree Club over their reluctance to accept female members.

Bainum has served as the Chairman of Choice Hotels and HCR Manor Care since 1987. He served as the President of Manor Care of America, Inc. from March 1987 until September 1998. During this time he also served as the CEO of ManorCare Health Services, Inc. He also serves as the Chairman of Realty Investment Co., his family real estate investment company.

Bainum formerly served on the Board of Trustees of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He serves on the Board of Visitors of the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Bainum is married, and has two children.
