Starter pack

In collectible card games and collectible miniature wargames, a booster pack is a sealed package of cards or figurines, designed to add to a player's collection.

Booster packs generally contain a relatively small number of items (6–19 for cards; 3–8 for figurines), randomly assorted. Booster packs are the smaller, cheaper counterparts of starter packs, though many expansion sets are sold only in boosters. While booster packs are cheaper than starter packs, the price per item is typically higher.

Booster packs are generally priced to serve as good impulse purchases, with prices comparable to a comic book and somewhat lower than those of most magazines, paperback books, and other such items.

In many games, there is a fixed distribution based on rarity, while others use truly random assortments. When the distribution is based on rarity, booster packs usually contain one or two rares, depending on the game, while the remainder are of lesser rarity.

A starter pack (or starter deck, battle box, and sometimes trial deck in Japan) is a sealed package of cards or figurines, designed to serve as the beginning of a collection, in collectible card games and collectible miniature wargames. It is essentially a "larger" booster pack, that sometimes comes with certain base items needed by all players that are less helpful in boosters - that explain the game, playmats, counters, common cards like "basic land" in Magic: The Gathering, storage boxes, and so on.

Starter packs usually contain a fairly large number of items. In some cases these items are randomly selected, while in others they are pre-determined, or often some combination of the two. In almost all cases, they are designed to provide a set of cards or figurines that is sufficient for a new player to play a game according to the rules, if not necessarily at a comparable power to a deck constructed from trading or purchasing many boosters. Some starter packs are sets meant for two players, so that a single set can be used instead of each player supplying his or her own.
