An election for the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives took place on January 6, 2015, during the 114th U.S. Congress. Incumbent speaker John Boehner was reelected. The election took place following a Republican victory in the United States House of Representatives elections, 2014.
The Speaker of the House follows the Vice President in the line of succession to the presidency of the United States in accordance with the Presidential Succession Act.
Despite a coordinated effort by some Republicans to oust Boehner, offering alternatives such as Louie Gohmert and Dan Webster, the effort proved unsuccessful. Additionally, there were several votes cast for individuals that were not sitting House members, including for Senators Rand Paul and Jeff Sessions and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
