South Abington Township is a township in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,073 at the 2010 census. The census-designated place of Chinchilla is within the township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 9.1 square miles (23.6 km²), of which 9.0 square miles (23.2 km²) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.4 km²), or 1.54%, is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 9,073 people, 3,364 households, and 2,328 families residing in the township. The population density was 1008.1 people per square mile (389.2/km²). There were 3,604 housing units at an average density of 400.4/sq mi (156.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 93.6% White, 1.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
There were 3,364 households, out of which 29.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
