Slovenia returned to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2001 with Nuša Derenda and the song "Energy (song)". The song was selected as the Slovene entry after it won the Slovene national final, EMA 2001.

The Slovene national broadcaster Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTVSLO) held a national final to select the Slovene entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2001, held on 12 May 2001. A semi-final and a final were held on 23 and 24 February, where the winner in the final was selected by televoting, an expert jury and an RTVSLO jury.

The semi-final of EMA 2001 was held on 23 February, hosted by Mojca Mavec at the RTVSLO TV Studios in Ljubljana. 22 songs competed in total, with 12 qualifiers being selected from the top 6 songs from the televoting and six jury wildcards.

The final of EMA 2001 was held on 24 February 2001 at the RTVSLO TV Studios in Ljubljana, hosted by Miša Molk, Marcel Stefancic and Mojca Mavec. The winner was again decided by televoting, an expert jury and an RTVSLO jury.

The winner was Nuša Derenda with "Ne, ni res" (No, it's not true). The winner of the televoting was Karmen Stavec with "Ostani tu" (Stay here), however only came third overall.

At Eurovision Derenda performed "Ne, ni res" in English as "Energy". On the night of the contest Derenda perform 17th in the running order, following the United Kingdom and preceding Poland. The Slovene votes were calculated through a public televote held after all songs had performed.

At the close of the voting, Slovenia, which had been one of the heavy favorites to win prior to the event, placed 7th in a field of 23, receiving 70 points. This was, and still is as of 2014, Slovenia's best place at Eurovision, along with Darja Švajger's "Prisluhni mi" from 1995. The results of Slovenia's televote showed that Estonia was the most voted song, gaining Slovenia's maximum 12 points.
