Skam (Norwegian pronunciation: [skɑm]; English: Shame) is a Norwegian teen drama TV series about the daily life of teenagers at the Hartvig Nissen School, a gymnasium in the wealthy borough of Frogner in West End Oslo. It is produced by NRK P3, which is part of NRK. The series is web-based and airs primarily on the website of NRK.
Skam follows a new main character each season. Throughout a week, a new clip, conversation or social media post is published on the NRK website, allowing viewers to follow the series on a daily basis. Each season has focus on particular topics, and during production, creator Julie Andem had extensive, hours-long interviews with individual persons in the target audience to be able to cover their stories. The first season, which premiered in September 2015, focused on relationship difficulties, loneliness, identity, and belonging. The second season, which premiered in March 2016, focused on a troubled relationship, feminism, eating disorders, and sexual assault. The third season, which premiered in October 2016, focused on coming out difficulties, homosexuality, mental health illness and religion. The fourth and final season, which premiered in April 2017, focuses on the Islamic religion, forbidden love, and the Norwegian russ celebratory period. NRK P3 editorial chief Håkon Moslet stated that the making of Skam had been "an extreme sport", and in an Instagram post, creator, writer and director Julie Andem wrote that "Skam has been a 24/7 job. It has also been amazingly fun to work on, and I really believe that has given the series a unique energy, and ensured that Skam continues to surprise and entertain. We recently decided that we won't be making a new season this fall. I know many of you out there will be upset and disappointed to hear this, but I'm confident this is the right decision."
Skam premiered without any promotion, due to the production and network's wish for teenagers to find it on their own and spread the news without the older generation even noticing the series. The actors were shielded from the media, with no launch interviews. However, the show broke viewership records. Its original premiere episode, first aired in September 2015, is one of the most viewed single episodes of any series on NRK's streaming service NRK TV, and the series was responsible for half of all traffic on NRK TV in the first week of June 2016. Its third season, airing at the end of 2016, broke all records in streaming on NRK TV and in Norway. Following its licensing deals with several other European countries, it also broke viewership records in Denmark and Sweden. Starting with season three, the show went viral, attracting an active international fanbase on social media, where fans promoted translations to aid in understanding. The show was a trending topic globally on several occasions, filming locations were visited by fans, and the actors received worldwide attention. In January 2017, NRK geoblocked the website from foreign visitors on demand from the music industry, due to the series' use of music that is only licensed for Norwegian audiences. NRK stated that it was working with the music industry to find a solution that would allow international viewing again, and the block was removed for Nordic countries in April 2017.
