Sipsey is located at 33°49′23″N 87°5′10″W / 33.82306°N 87.08611°W / 33.82306; -87.08611 (33.823108, -87.086127).

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2), all land.

Sipsey was founded in the early 1920s as a company town for the DeBardeleben Coal Company, founded by coal magnate Henry T. DeBardeleben. It was incorporated as a town on August 14, 1965.

As of the census of 2000, there were 552 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,124.5 people per square mile (435.0/km²). There were 239 housing units at an average density of 486.9 per square mile (188.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 68.12% White, 31.34% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. 0.18% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
