Singur (pronounced Shinggur) is a census town in Singur CD Block in Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Singur railway station is 34 km from Howrah Station on the Howrah-Tarakeswar line. It is 2 km ahead of Kamarkundu junction, the crossing point of Howrah-Bardhaman chord and Howrah-Tarakeshwar lines. It is on the Durgapur Expressway/ NH 2 connecting with Maheswarpur.
Singur is located at 22°49′N 88°14′E / 22.81°N 88.23°E. It has an average elevation of 14 metres (45 ft), and is situated on the Ganges delta. The several villages comprising Singur include Dewan Bheri, Dobandi, Baburberi, Khasherberia, Joymolla, Ujjal Sangha, Beraberi, Bajemelia, Anandanagar, Ratanpur, Gopalnagor, Sahanapara, Apurbopur, Jalaghata, Nildhighipar, Daluigacha East and West, Mirzapur, Bankipur, Bonchipota, Nabapally, Beleghata, Khosalpur, Pawnan, Gandarpukur, Choyani, Ratanpur 1 & 2, Singerbheri, Boyspara, Nasibpur, Hakimpur, Nanda, Habos Pota, Naskarpur, Balarampur, Chhutipur, Subhipur, Notun Bazar, Benipur, Antisara, Burashanti, Ghanashyampur, Paltagorh, Telepukur, Durgarampur, Biramnagar, Harishnagar ( Dopaghata), Rajarabathan etc. A river has crossed through one side of Singur.
As per 2011 Census of India Singur had a total population of 21,382 of which 10,825 (51%) were males and 10,557 (49%) were females. Population below 6 years was 1,646. The total number of literates in Singur was 17,458 (88.46% of the population over 6 years).
