Singam (English: Lion) is a series of Tamil-language action masala film created by Hari and starring Suriya. The series follows the adventures of an honest police officer from Nallur, Durai Singam. The film series started with their first release on the big screen in 2010 with Singam which received positive reviews from the critics and grossed ₹650 million worldwide. The film's success led to remakes in Kannada as Kempe Gowda, in Hindi as Singham, and in Bengali as Shotru. The franchise's second film, Singam II, was released three years later. lt was also successful. The third film in the series, Si3, followed in 2017. The success of all three film in this series make this film series as one of the most successful film series in India.
Durai Singam (Suriya), is the honest police sub inspector of Nallur, assisted by his bumbling colleague Erimalai (Vivek). His family business is provision stores and Durai Singam wants to join it, but he joined the police force due to the wishes of his father, Soundarapandi(Radha Ravi). He resolves most of the problems in his village with non-violence and mutual counselling. He uses force only when the situation demands it, thereby gaining much reputation and love from the villagers. Mahalingam (Nassar) is an industrialist in Chennai and a friend of Soundarapandi . He comes to the village with his beautiful daughter, Kavya (Anushka Shetty). Eventually Durai Singam and Kavya fall in love with each other. Everything seems to be smooth-running until Chennai-based Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj), a big-time extortionist with shady mafia dealings who blackmails people by complaining to the Income Tax Department, is required to travel to Nallur to sign a conditional bail. He instead, sends one of his allies to do the formalities, much to the anger and rage of Durai Singam who demands Mayil sign the bail in person. Humiliated, Mayil Vaaganam reaches Nallur, but is unable to take any revenge on Durai Singam fearing the immense love and devotion of the entire village towards Durai Singam. Using his political contacts, he gets Durai Singam promoted as inspector and transferred to Chennai to teach him a lesson.
