Most of the species are found in eastern Russia from northeastern Siberia south to Primorsky Krai but one species S. alpina is found 2500 km away from any of its congeners in the vicinity of Almaty, Kazakhstan (it is possible this species may belong to another genus).
Spiders of this genus are dark coloured and hairy with a body length of 5.25 - 7.25 mm.
