Shirley is a town in Piscataquis County, Maine, United States. The town was named after Shirley, Massachusetts. The population was 233 at the 2010 census. It was the birthplace of humorist Bill Nye.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 54.14 square miles (140.22 km2), of which, 53.31 square miles (138.07 km2) of it is land and 0.83 square miles (2.15 km2) is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 233 people, 116 households, and 63 families residing in the town. The population density was 4.4 inhabitants per square mile (1.7/km2). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 4.7 per square mile (1.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 99.6% White and 0.4% Asian.

There were 116 households of which 10.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 2.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.7% were non-families. 36.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.01 and the average family size was 2.63.

The median age in the town was 53.6 years. 12.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.8% were from 25 to 44; 44.1% were from 45 to 64; and 20.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 53.6% male and 46.4% female.

As of the census of 2000, there were 183 people, 81 households, and 57 families residing in the town. The population density was 3.5 people per square mile (1.3/km²).
