The school primarily serves Sharyland, an unincorporated rural area known for its agricultural and citrus industry. The school also serves portions of the cities of Alton, McAllen, Mission, Edinburg, and Palmhurst.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Sharyland High School was Hidalgo County's largest high school, with 3,261 students. Sharyland was 59% Hispanic, 33% White, 1% African-American, 7% Asian, and less than 1% Native American. The amount of students on free or reduced lunch programs was 41%.
