Shanthi Nivasam is a 1960 Telugu drama film, produced by Sundarlal Nahatha, T. Ashwadanarayana under Sri Productions banner and directed by C. S. Rao. Starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Rajasulochana, Kantha Rao, Krishna Kumari, Devika in lead roles and music composed by Ghantasala. The film was remade in Hindi as Gharana (1961 film) and much later remade as Hindi Movie Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988). It was dubbed into Malayalam as Shanthi Nivas (1962).
Ramadasu (Chittoor V. Nagaiah) is a wealthy & mild-mannered man his wife Shanthamma (Suryakantham) is aggressive petty-minded and controlling wife. They are having three sons and a daughter. The second son Raju (Kantha Rao) is married to Lakshmi (Devika); the younger son, Gopi (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) and the daughter Chitti (Surabhi Balasaraswathi) is married to Simhalu (Relangi) and prefers to live with her mother instead of her husband's residence. Shanthamma always ill-treats her daughters-in-law, the widowed Ramani (Hemalatha) and the devout Lakshmi. Gopi is very close his sister-in-law who respects her more than his mother. Gopi falls in love with Radha (Rajasulochana) who has a vixen stepmother (Mohana) and an understanding father Lawyer Seetapathi Rao (K.V.S. Sarma). The jealous Chitti creates suspicion in Raju about the relationship between Gopi & Lakshmi's close relation and thinks that them of having an affair with each other, he makes observations but is not ready to confront anyone. Raju's suspicions are still not laid to rest even when Gopi marries Radha. Raju starts to drink and ends up getting friendly with a childhood friend, Ragini (Krishna Kumari). Gopi with the help of Simhalu and Radha sets things right, brings peace to the abode.
