Sergio Fajardo Valderrama, (Born June 6, 1956) is a Colombian Politician and Mathematician. Fajardo served as the Governor of Antioquia from 2012-2016. He first entered politics in 2003 when he was elected Mayor of Medellin, the second-largest city in Colombia and the capital of Antioquia.
Fajardo was a Vice Presidential candidate in 2010 alongside presidential candidate Antanas Mockus. They finished second, losing to Juan Manuel Santos and Angelino Garzon. Fajardo brands himself as a pragmatic politician with no particular ideology, whilst political analysts and the media label him as a centrist not tied to traditional Colombian politics.
Fajardo is married to Ana Lucrecia Restrepo, and is the father to Mariana Fajardo and Alejandro Fajardo. He graduated (high school) from the Colegio Benedictino, and has an undergraduate and a graduate degree (M.Sc) in mathematics from the Universidad de los Andes - Bogotá. Fajardo then went to the United States to study, and earned a PhD in Mathematics with a minor in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
As a journalist he was subdirector of El Colombiano and wrote a regular column for El Mundo, El Espectador and Dinero; he had roles in the TV programs Operación Ciudad in Telemedellín and Zanahoria in Teleantioquia and also formed part of the Viva FM Caracol Radio team.
