The scaRNAs (Small Cajal body RNA genes) resemble snoRNAs and perform a similar role in RNA maturation, but their targets are spliceosomal snRNAs and they perform site-specific modifications of spliceosomal snRNA precursors in the Cajal bodies of the nucleus. There are at least 25 human genes, each specifying one type of scaRNA. Like snoRNA genes, the scaRNA genes are typically located within the introns of genes transcribed by RNA polymerase II
