Salem Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,254 at the 2010 census. It's home to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, a nuclear power plant.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.0 square miles (77.7 km2), of which 29.0 square miles (75.1 km2) is land and 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), or 3.34%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,269 people, 1,743 households, and 1,263 families residing in the township. The population density was 147.2 people per square mile (56.8/km2). There were 1,924 housing units at an average density of 66.3/sq mi (25.6/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.62% White, 0.47% African American, 0.02% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.
There were 1,743 households, out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.87.
