Sabae Domain

The Sabae Domain (鯖江藩 Sabae-han?) was a Japanese domain of the Edo period. It is associated with Echizen Province in modern-day Fukui Prefecture on the island of Honshu.

In the han system, Sabae was a political and economic abstraction based on periodic cadastral surveys and projected agricultural yields. In other words, the domain was defined in terms of kokudaka, not land area. This was different from the feudalism of the West.

The domain was valued at 50,000 koku.

At Sabae, Bankei-ji was as the family temple for the ruling Manabe clan. Its gate was built in 1849.

The hereditary daimyo were head of the clan and head of the domain.
