As of the census of 2000, there were 707 people, 260 households, and 197 families residing in the city. The population density was 215.9 people per square mile (83.5/km²). There were 280 housing units at an average density of 85.5 per square mile (33.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 60.40% White, 38.33% African American, 0.85% Asian, and 0.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.71% of the population.
There were 260 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% were married couples living together, 21.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.19.
