The men's single sculls competition at the 1968 Summer Olympics took place at Virgilio Uribe Rowing and Canoeing Course, Mexico. The event was held 15–19 October.

First two rowers advanced directly to semi-finals. The others must compete again in the repechage for remaining six spots in the semi-finals.

Three fastest rowers from each repechage advanced to semi-finals.

First three rowers from each semi-final advanced to the final round, while the rest advanced to the small final.

The final round is for the rowers who still have chance to get the medals. The small final is used to determine the 7th until 12th place of this rowing event.
