The Roniaur are a Hindu caste found in India . They are also known as Roniyar. Generally they use Gupta or Rauniyar as their surname.
The Roniaur are a sub-group and supreme within the Bania community now, and they get their name from the Hindi word 'rauna', which means hawking or from 'raun' distorted from 'rann', which means battle.Rauniyars derive their origin from Gupta ,Pushyabhutis and Mauryan rulers who atlast during decline reintegrated and merged. They are found through out Awadh, but their main concentration is the Maharajganj District. In addition, there are also small communities found in Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Mirzapur, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and the Saran District in Bihar. They speak Awadhi among themselves, and Hindi with outsiders. Unlike other Banias, they are vegetarians and sometime non-vegetarians .
In Bihar, the Roniaur are also known as Namnihar. They claim to have come from Awadh some 300 years ago and some are local inhabitants of Bihar too. The Roniaur are found mainly in the districts of Patna, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Munger, Bhagalpur, Nawada and Gaya. Rauniyars were previously rulers of Patna area and nearby region as they have decent amount of land in main old Patna(Patliputra) which they got from their ruling ancestors that is Gupta , Mauryan and Pushyabhuti rulers .Nowadays,their common surnames are Sah, Sahu, Gupta and Kesri . They are strictly endogamous, and practice clan exogamy. The Ronoaur speak Maithili in north east Bihar and Bhojpuri in western Bihar.
