Romania will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 after having been forced to take a one year break in 2016 when they got disqualified. The song that will represent Romania will be chosen through the national preselection Selecția Națională 2017.

Prior to the 2017 Contest, Romania had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest seventeen times since its first entry in 1994. Its highest placing in the contest, to this point, has been third place, which the nation achieved on two occasions: in 2005 with the song "Let Me Try" performed by Luminița Anghel and Sistem and in 2010 with the song "Playing with Fire" performed by Paula Seling and Ovi. To this point, Romania has qualified to the final on every occasion that they participated since the introduction of semi-finals to the format of the contest in 2004.

TVR opened a submission period for artists and composers to submit their entries between 20 December 2016 and 22 January 2017. A total of 84 entries were received, all of which would get to participate in the televised audition stage. These auditions will be held on the 27th, 28th and 29 January and broadcast on a number of Romanian TV channels between February 5 and 11. From these songs, 15 songs will qualify to the semi-final held on February 26, where a jury will determine which 10 songs will qualify for the final held on March the 5th. The winner will then be determined by 100% televoting.

On January 26, 2017 TVR announced that out of the 84 entries that had been submitted, only 72 would participate in the first stage of the national selection.
