Romania was represented by Mălina Olinescu, with the song "Eu cred", at the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 9 May in Birmingham. "Eu cred" was chosen as the Romanian entry at the national final on 14 March.
The National final was held at the Palatul Copilor in Bucharest, on March 14, 1998, and was hosted by Iuliana Marciuc Posea, Daniela Nane and Anca Ţurcașiu. All of the songs were presented as video clips which had been pre-recorded at the TVR TV studios. The winner was chosen by a combination of 4 regional juries, televoting and an "expert" jury which included Dida Drăgan & Dan Bittman. Mălina Olinescu came 2nd in the televote, behind Monica Anghel.
On the night of the final Mălina performed 15th in the running order, following Portugal and preceding United Kingdom. At the close of the televoting it had received only 6 points (all came from Israel), placing Romania 22nd of the 25 entries. The 12 points from the Romanian jury went to United Kingdom (who finished 2nd). Having had to sit out the 1997 contest due to relegation, Romania were again demoted on the cumulative countback rule and would not take part in 1999.
