Reading is a city in Hillsdale County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,078 at the 2010 census.

The city is surrounded by Reading Township on M-49.

In 1835 the original small community was called Basswood Corners because of a stand of basswood trees nearby, and later became Reading.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.01 square miles (2.62 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,078 people, 392 households, and 281 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,067.3 inhabitants per square mile (412.1/km2). There were 435 housing units at an average density of 430.7 per square mile (166.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.9% White, 0.1% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 0.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.8% of the population.

There were 392 households of which 44.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.21.
