Quintus Haterius Antoninus


Quintus Haterius Antoninus or known as Antoninus was a Roman who lived in the 1st century. He was the only child to Domitia Lepida the Elder and consul Decimus Haterius Agrippa.

His paternal grandfather was the influential orator and senator Quintus Haterius. His maternal grandparents were consul Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus and Antonia Major. Antonia was a daughter of Triumvir Mark Antony and Octavia Minor, sister of Emperor Augustus.

Antoninus was a first cousin of Empress Valeria Messalina, consul Marcus Valerius Messala Corvinus, consul Faustus Cornelius Sulla Felix and Emperor Nero and a second cousin to Emperor Caligula and Emperor Claudius. He was among the two male descendants of Antony to carry a form of the name Antonius. The other descendant of Antony's who carried a form of his name Antonius was King Polemon II of Pontus whose birth name was Marcus Antonius Polemon Pythodoros.

Antoninus was consul in 53. By 57-58, he had as a senator had squandered his inheritance through extravagances. According to Seneca the Younger, he was considered by some as a professional legacy hunter.
