Phoenix City Council

The Phoenix, Arizona City Council consists of a mayor and eight city council members. While the mayor is elected in a citywide election, city council members are elected by votes only in the districts they represent, with both the mayor and councillors serving four year terms. The current mayor of Phoenix is Greg Stanton, a Democrat who was elected to a four-year term in 2011. In setting city policy and passing rules and regulations, the mayor and city council members each have equal voting power. The Phoenix mayoral election, 2015 were in 2015 for the office of mayor, as well as for the councilors in odd numbered districts. All the incumbents were re-elected.

Before 1948, the city of Phoenix was governed by commission. In 1948, the system was changed to a city council with a mayor selected by plurality-at-large voting in nonpartisan elections. In 1982, the election system was changed so that councilors represented districts.
