Leutnant Galland joined 8./Jagdgeschwader 26, commanded by his brother Adolf, in February 1941. He claimed his first victory on 6 July, a Spitfire shot down, and by end of 1941 his score had reached three. He recorded his 10th victory on 3 May 1942, a Spitfire downed over Calais.
