Panakkaran is a 1990 Tamil language film starring Rajinikanth and Gouthami. This film ran for more than 200 days and was declared a hit film. It was dubbed in Telegu as Kondaveedi Puli and Hindi as Dhanwan No. 1. This movie is a remake of Lawaaris (1981) starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Muthu (Rajinikanth) is a poor man who works in a labour factory. He works only to give his money to his drunkard father (Senthaamarai) who tortures him for that right from his childhood. Muthu gets a chance to go to work in Vijayakumar's factory. After that, he learns that Vijayakumar is his father. How they unite forms the story.
The film marked the first time collaboration of Rajinikanth and P. Vasu. The success of the film prompted further collaborations between the pair. The pair went on to do Mannan (1992), Uzhaippali (1993), Chandramukhi (2005) and Kuselan (2008).
