Okabena is a town in Jackson County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 188 at the 2010 census. The community's name is a Dakota term meaning "the nesting place of herons."
Okabena was founded in 1879 after the railroad had been extended to that point. A post office has been in operation at Okabena since 1880.
On May 19, 1933, the Okabena Bank was robbed by Bonnie and Clyde. After leaving the bank, they were shot at many times, but escaped on a country road with approximately $2500 (approximately $44,000 in 2013 dollars).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.21 square miles (0.54 km2), all land.
The community is located on County Roads 9 and 20 west of South Heron Lake.
As of the census of 2010, there were 188 people, 74 households, and 54 families residing in the city. The population density was 895.2 inhabitants per square mile (345.6/km2). There were 86 housing units at an average density of 409.5 per square mile (158.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.6% White, 1.1% African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 3.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population.
There were 74 households of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 27.0% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.93.
