Oasis Academy Lord's Hill is an Academy situated in the city of Southampton, Hampshire and specialises in Arts. Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill replaced Millbrook Community School and Oaklands Community School which both closed in August 2008. The Academy opened in September 2008 in the existing buildings on the two sites of the predecessor schools, then moved to a new building in 2012. The Academy building is, quote Steve Chalke MBE; 'The best school building in Great Britain' costing over £16 million, with features such as; radio facilities, a recording studio, TV studio, Apple Mac suites, a theatre, astro turf, MUGA and many more.
The Academy is sponsored by Oasis Community Learning, which is a separate charity, but is part of the Oasis global family. Oasis, a Christian organisation, was founded by Steve Chalke M.B.E. in 1985, and began its work in the UK but now delivers educational, healthcare and housing projects throughout the world.
The Academy initially caters for approximately 950 students in the 11-16 age range. All places at the Academy are free and available to the local community within an admissions policy that mirrors the inclusive admissions arrangements for community schools in Southampton. At the time of the opening of the new building in 2011, the Academy offered 5 forms of entry (5FE) – for a predicted 900 students 11-16.
Students are sorted into four different houses, then sectioned into smaller tutor groups, of which students attend every morning before they start the curricular day. The different house the student is situated, is identified by the colour of the stripes on their tie (Yellow, Blue, Red and Green). Jane Austen, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Mary Seacole and Isaac Newton were all people who have made a significant contribution to society. They represent diverse areas of human activity: Literature, Engineering, Medical Care and Scientific Endeavour. Therefore, the school's houses are named as the mentioned's surnames.
