The OWL University of Applied Sciences (German: Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe or Hochschule OWL) is a state tech university in Germany, which carries out research and higher education at four locations. The university belongs to the 10 best research oriented Universities of Applied Sciences in Germany and enrolled approximately 6.700 students in 9 faculties. Approximately 1.500 freshmen entered OWL in 2015. It offers Bachelor and Master study programmes with a strong focus to Engineering and Technology disciplines. Ph.D. programmes are carried out in cooperation with different partner universities (e.g.).

The headquarter is found in Lemgo, located between Hannover and Dortmund, in the north-east of the state North Rhine-Westphalia. The university is named just as the high-tech region Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL), which is one of the most important technology clusters of mechanical engineering and industrial electronics in Germany. Because of its research strength the university became a full member of the European University Association in October 2010. Electrical Engineering belongs to the top ranked study programmes in germany.

At the OWL, research is carried out in the fields of food safety and industrial automation technologies. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science belongs to the most successful research-oriented faculties in Germany.

The CIIT (Centrum Industrial IT) is Germany's first Science-to-Business Center in the field of Industrial Automation Technologies. It is located at the university campus of Lemgo and is focussed to enable information technologies for intelligent technical systems. More than 200 experts from research institutions like the University Institute Industrial IT (inIT) and the Fraunhofer Application Center Industrial Automation (IOSB-INA) as well as high-tech companies are working under one roof to create solutions for Intelligent Industrial automation with a strong focus on cyber physical systems. As a joint initiative of Fraunhofer and OWL 2016 the SmartFactoryOWL was opened as a research and demonstration platform for integrating ICT in a real production environment.
