Northland, a small suburb in western Wellington, New Zealand. The suburb is served by two state primary schools, Northland School and Cardinal McKeefry Catholic Primary School. The suburb is named in honour of Thomas Uchter Caulfield, Viscount Northland who was the son of Uchter Knox, 5th Earl of Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand from 1897 to 1904.
The suburb, formerly known as Creswick, lies to the west of Kelburn, to the east of Karori, to the south of Wadestown and to the south-east of Wilton. It sits high on the south western slopes of Tinakori Hill. The suburb is adjacent to the Wellington Botanic Garden, the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary and Ian Galloway Park.
Northland contains a cluster of shops at the top of Garden Road, known as the Creswick Shops.
Northland's location on the bus route past the university, proximity to town, surrounding parks and the high level of sunshine attract upper-middle-class families. Due to Northland's proximity to the university and to it being on the university bus route, many students and faculty live there.
Prime Ministers Michael Joseph Savage and after him Peter Fraser lived in 64-66 Harbour View Road, a house purchased for the purpose, between 1939 and 1949. Following the general election of 1949 Sidney Holland chose to live nearer parliament at 41 Pipitea Street, Thorndon.
