North Stainley is a village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England about 5 miles north of Ripon. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is the closest settlement to the theme park Lightwater Valley which is 0.62 miles (1 km) to the south.
North Stainley is derived jointly from Old English and Old Norse and means a stone clearing. In 1086 the Domesday Book shows the very small hamlet of (North) Stainley in the antient wapentake of Hallikeld in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Probably before 1832, and certainly by 1835, the entire wapentake was attached to the North Riding.
