North Kanpur is a zone within the city limits of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, India. This zone is densely populated and includes Kanpur's central business district. Many important commercial establishments, the post office, district hospital and the Cawnpore Kotwali are located here. This zone has been a hub of commercial, social and political activities since the British era.
As the name suggests, North Kanpur covers the northernmost zone of Kanpur. Old Kanpur is also located here. North Kanpur can be easily accessed via road and rail. Its proximity to the river Ganges gives water access. The mall road acts as the lifeline of the city.
It hosts several educational institutions, including the National Sugar Institute, IIT Kanpur, Kanpur University, Chandrashekhar Azad University for Agriculture, Christ Church College, Methodist High School, DPS, DAV College, Dr Virendra Swaroop College and Halim Muslim Degree College.
This zone has one of the largest vegetable markets in the city and lies on the historic Grand Trunk Road, locally known as G.T. Road which extends to Delhi 415 km away. The Kanpur-Kasganj-Aligarh-Bhiwani Railway line runs parallel to the G.T. Road in Kalianpur.
The suburb is well connected with rest of the city by road and rail. The industrial area of Panki lies 5 km south of Kalianpur and is well connected with Kalianpur.
The pilgrimage village of Bithoor, 12 km away, connects to G.T. Road. Bithoor is connected with Kalianpur with two roads. The metre-gauge rail line used to run through Kalianpur and was connected to Brahmavarta Station in Bithoor, but due to conversion of the line to broad gauge, the railway route to Bithoor was closed and the Brahvarta station is now deserted. There were vital demands from the public to restart the railway route connecting Kanpur Central railway station to Brahmavarta, Bithoor though the matter remains reserved. The government is planning new townships in Kalianpur suburb and many real estates are coming up in the suburb.
