The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) (1901-1947) was a province of British India. It was established in 1901 from the western districts of Punjab Province and was divided into Settled Districts and the Frontier Agencies, which had markedly different forms of administration. On Partition, in 1947, it acceded to Pakistan, and its territories now comprise all or part of the following: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Gilgit-Baltistan.

The North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan (1947-1955) was based on the Settled Districts of the imperial province of the same name. Pakistan separated the Frontier Agencies of the imperial NWFP and divided them into Pakhtun and non-Pakhtun administrations. The Pakhtun Agencies became the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), whilst the non-Pakhtun Agencies were joined with parts of the Pakistani regions of the former Kashmir State (′Azad Kashmir′) to create the Northern Areas, now known as Gilgit-Baltistan. In 1955 Pakistan suppressed the Provinces in a bid to foster a more unified Pakistani identity: West Pakistan was administered through its Districts. The provinces were eventually restored and the NWFP area became Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province on April 19, 2010 when the Eighteenth Amendment was signed by President Asif Ali Zardari.
