Neptune Rowing Club, founded in 1908, is located on the River Liffey at Islandbridge, Dublin. It is one of the largest clubs in Ireland, steeped in history and is housed in a new boathouse that was opened in March 2010 by then-President of Ireland Mary McAleese.
The club is a member of the Dublin Metropolitan group of clubs which operates a boat house on the reservoir in Blessington - therefore the club's rowers train at both Islandbridge and Blessington. The Dublin Metropolitan Regatta is also hosted here each year.
Neptune has a strong history in competitive rowing - it has accumulated 152 National Championship titles since 1914, and has won a number of Henley Regatta events including the Diamond Sculls, Britannia 4, Ladies Plate 8, Thames Cup 8 and Prince of Wales 4x (composite with Commercial RC).
Throughout the eighties and nineties, Neptune managed to almost totally dominate senior men's rowing in Ireland. During this period, Neptune were also prominent on Ireland's International rowing scene, with a large majority of international oarsmen being Neptune men.
Sean Drea won the Diamond Sculls for three consecutive years: 1973, 1974, 1975. Neptune won its first crew event in 1982 in the Britannia Challenge Cup for coxed fours.
In the final of the 1986 Ladies Plate, Neptune beat Harvard University. The crew was Gerry Murphy (bow), Gerry Macken (2), Frank Moore (3), Alan Thomas (4), Pat McDonagh (5), Phillip Browne (6), Eunan Dolan (7), Jim Cassidy (stroke) & Gerry O'Brien (cox). The crew was coached by Con Cronin, Joe Moroney & Liam Perdiasatt.
In the 1996 Thames Cup final, Neptune beat Wallingford A. The crew was Aidan McMahon (bow), Jason Connolly (2), Tommy Colsh (3), Albert Maher (4), Kevin Lynch (5), Jim Cassidy (6), Gary O'Neill (7), Colm O'Rourke (stroke) & Brendan Farrell (cox) with Peter Buckley as coach.
Neil Casey of Neptune won the Prince of Wales quadruple sculls in a composite crew with Commercial Rowing Club in 2005.
