Nawanshahr (Punjabi: ਨਵਾਂਸ਼ਹਿਰ) is a city that became a district in 1995; now it is a municipal council in Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is the headquarters of Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar District.
As of the 2011 India census, Nawanshahr had a population of 587,468. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Nawanshahr has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 71%. In Nawanshahr, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
