Asteriscus smithii (syn. Nauplius smithii) is a species of aster flowers that belong to the Asteraceae family. The species are endemic.
Its local name is called macela de gordo (then spelt as "macela-de-gordo"), its English name is nominally the São Nicolau or Monte Gordo aster flower, not called as the Smith's aster flower or asterisk. The plant plays a role in traditional medicine.
The aster flower has a shape of a tuff and is measured up to 80 cm in height and produces yellow flowers small and large in number, it is grouped in rounded floral rosettes.
Asteriscus smithii are founded only in the island of São Nicolau and at higher elevation in the area of Monte Gordo and its natural park.
