Nargund or Naragunda was a zamindari ruled by Bhave dynasty of chitpavan brahmin family;which is at present a town in Gadag district in the Indian state of Karnataka.

The name Naragunda means hills of jackals. The astrologist and a Jain Sridharacharya from this town was the author of Jatakatilaka.

Nargund was ruled by the Venkat Rao of the Bhave dynasty during the late 18th century on behalf of the Maratha Peshwas of Poona. Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore subjugated it in 1778. The Brahmin zamindars of Nargund were loyal to the Maratha Peshwas, It was attacked by Tipu Sultan in 1784, who were force retreat fearing an attack by the Marathas. Nargund came under Maratha suzerainty in 1787, after it was surrendered by Tipu Sultan to the Marathas. The Patwardhan and the Bhave family and the Pethe family (who were their accountants) were captured by the invading forces of Tipu. They were imprisoned in Mysore until their release in 1787 by the Marathas. They returned to Nargund. Nargund is also famous for its cotton crop.

This is a birthplace of Shri JAGANNATH JOSHI,who was a member of RSS, a member of Jansangh( Present day it is in the form of Bharatiy Janata Party), a member of parliament from Madya-Pradedh. He was freedom fighter,who was imprisoned in Goa during its liberation. He was a good orator in Kannada, Marathi, English & Hindi & a great patriot.

The biggest flag produced at Khadhi Gramodyoga get hosted on the Nargund Hill every year on Indian independence Day (15 August) and on Indian Republic Day (26 January) since independence. This activity is under control of city administration.
