The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, commonly referred to as NIT Trichy, is a public research university near the city of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1964, as the Regional Engineering College Tiruchirapalli under the affiliation of University of Madras, the institute became independent in 2003 and has acquired the deemed university status. It was declared as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007. The institute is located in a campus of 800 acres. The institute has 16 departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities and management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.
National Institutional Ranking Framework, Outlook and India Today recently ranked NIT Trichy among the top 15 best engineering universities nationwide and one of the top three universities in Tamil Nadu. NIT Trichy admits its undergraduate students through Joint Entrance Examination (Main), graduate students through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, Common Admission Test and Common Entrance Test for Masters in Computer Applications. The institute organizes annual cultural and technical festivals: Pragyan (technical festival), Festember (cultural festival) that attract participants from all over the country and abroad.
