Montalchez is a municipality in the district of Boudry in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland.
Montalchez is first mentioned in 1340 as villa de Montallichie.
Montalchez has an area, as of 2009[update], of 6.4 square kilometers (2.5 sq mi). Of this area, 3.72 km2 (1.44 sq mi) or 57.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 2.41 km2 (0.93 sq mi) or 37.5% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.27 km2 (0.10 sq mi) or 4.2% is settled (buildings or roads) and 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 2.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.6%. Out of the forested land, 33.8% of the total land area is heavily forested and 3.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 17.9% is used for growing crops and 22.1% is pastures, while 1.2% is used for orchards or vine crops and 16.7% is used for alpine pastures.
The municipality is located in the Boudry district. It consists of the village of Montalchez and the hamlet of Erperens.
The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is Per fess Argent and Gules, a Rose counterchanged.
Montalchez has a population (as of December 2015[update]) of 243. As of 2008[update], 4.4% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years (2000–2010 ) the population has changed at a rate of 37.6%. It has changed at a rate of 27.1% due to migration and at a rate of 10% due to births and deaths.
Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks French (179 or 97.3%) as their first language, German is the second most common (3 or 1.6%) and English is the third (1 or 0.5%).
