Monkstown, County Antrim


Monkstown is a townland (of 811 acres) and electoral ward in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is within the urban area of Newtownabbey and the Newtownabbey Borough Council area. The townland was previously called Ballynamanagh (from Irish Baile na Manach, meaning 'townland of the monks') It is also situated in the civil parish of Carnmoney and the historic barony of Belfast Lower.

The settlement used to be quite small, but has recently seen some major developments in both jobs and new housing estates. The Community school serves as both school and as community centre. Canadian-owned company, Nortel Networks, had a factory in Monkstown.

Monkstown railway station is currently closed on the Belfast-Derry railway line run by Northern Ireland Railways.

18th Newtownabbey Old Boys F.C. and Nortel F.C. play association football in the Northern Amateur Football League.
